Cadmium plating of metal

Cadmium plating is a surface treatment process in which a thin layer of cadmium is applied to metal parts to protect them from corrosion — especially in harsh environments such as marine, aerospace, and chemical industries. It provides excellent resistance to salt spray, moisture, and atmospheric corrosion, making it highly valuable for components exposed to extreme conditions.

The most common method is electroplating, where the metal part is submerged in a cadmium-containing electrolyte solution, and an electric current causes cadmium ions to deposit onto the surface. Other methods include vacuum deposition and thermodiffusion cadmizing, depending on the application and precision required.

Cadmium coatings offer strong adhesion, excellent lubricity, and ductility. One of its key benefits is the ability to prevent galvanic corrosion when used in contact with dissimilar metals, such as aluminum. Additionally, cadmium-plated surfaces are easy to solder and show good wear resistance.

Advantages of cadmium plating include outstanding corrosion protection, especially in marine environments, low coefficient of friction, good solderability, and chemical resistance. However, cadmium is toxic, so strict environmental and safety regulations must be followed during the plating process. When handled properly, cadmium plating remains an essential solution for protecting critical components in demanding industries.
